On June 29, General Robert E. Lee had sent orders to Ewell in Carlisle to give up the quest of capturing Harrisburg and rejoin the Army of Northern Virginia somewhere in the vicinity of Cashtown to the south. In this 1998 oil painting artist Mort Kunstler depicted Robert E. Lee entering Cashtown, Pennsylvania, on July 1, 1863. There, Lee could hear the sounds of the first day's engagement at Gettysburg just off to the east.
