As Rode's Division moved south from Carlisle on June 30th, General Ewell and his staff rode with them. When the column passed through Papertown [modern day Mt. Holly Springs], 8,000 men halted to fill canteens and soak tired feet. During this halt, General Ewell toured the Kempton and Mullen paper factory, followed by a nervous Yankee owner. When it was time for the column to move south again, towards Gettysburg, Ewell purchased $5,000 worth of military paper forms, and paid for them in worthless Confederate notes.
