As the Confederate Army moved deeper into Pennsylvania with each passing hour, a last-minute influx of militia rushed to defend the state capital. This contemporary drawing shows Pennsylvania civilians digging of earthworks on Hummel Heights, a high point on the western bank of the Susquehanna River across from Harrisburg. In late June, lead elements of Lee's troops were directly across from Harrisburg. Had Lee not called them back, the Union militia would have been no match for the veteran Army of Northern Virginia.
