Little Round Top. Plum Run (as seen from the Confederate side. Gettysburg, the largest battle ever fought on American soil, took place in Pennsylvania. In 1866, the Pennsylvania Legislature commissioned artist Peter Frederick Rothermel to portray the battle of Gettysburg on canvas, eventually resulting in five highly accurate paintings. This painting depicts the July 2 charge of the Pennsylvania Reserves through the Plum Run Valley just west of Little Round Top, to repel the final Confederate thrust of the day from Longstreet's First Corps
