This contemporary illustration shows members of the New York militia under fire from J.E.B. Stuart's horse artillery on July 1st in Carlisle. Three times Stuart demanded surrender from Yankee militia commander General William F. Smith, and three times Smith refused. Receiving word of the fighting at Gettysburg, the Confederates headed south, but not before destroying the Carlisle Army Barracks.
