Born in South Carolina, and then raised in Georgia and Alabama, James Longstreet (1821-1904) graduated from West Point in 1842. Known as Lee's old "War Horse," he was arguably the best corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. At Gettysburg, however, Longstreet and Lee disagreed about the way the battle was fought. After the war, critics would blame Longstreet in part for the Confederate defeat.
