The Scouting Party, by Edwin Forbes, between 1839-1864. As advance units of General Albert Jenkins" Confederate cavalry crossed the Mason-Dixon Line into Pennsylvania, their progress was contested by one company of courageous, outnumbered, Union troopers led by Captain William H. Boyd. Boyd and his company of Pennsylvanians from Philadelphia, who were subsequently attached to the 1st New York cavalry regiment, relentlessly contested every inch of the Confederate advance north, and bought precious time for the Army of the Potomac to catch up to the Rebels at the crossroads of Gettysburg.
