After MGM terminated his film contract in 1954 Lanza made a series of poor investments and found himself owing $250,000 in back taxes to the IRS. Overweight and desperate for work, he was sued by his former landlord for $4,361.66 for damages he and his family were alleged to have done to a rented house.
