In 1901, financier John Pierpont Morgan purchased Carnegie Steel and the National Tube Works in McKeesport, PA. From these he fashioned U. S. Steel, the nation's first billion-dollar company. The deal made Carnegie, "the richest man in the world," and cemented Morgan's stature as the greatest deal maker of his age.
