After immigrating to the United States from England, multi-talented Antoni van Zandt (1810-1877) settled in Philadelphia and working under the stage name Signor Blitz became of the nation's most popular performers. Well known for his "ventriloqual powers, his skill in birds, and his extraordinary feats in Natural Magic," Blitz filled theaters throughout the nation. Indeed, demand for his act was so great that at one time, 13 magicians performed under the name Blitz.
