A successful businessman in Columbia, Stephen Smith eventually moved to Philadelphia and became a prominent member of the free black community there.

A successful businessman in Columbia, PA, Stephen Smith fled to Canada after passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850,  then moved to Philadelphia, where he became a prominent member of the city's free black community.
