During the Railroad Strike of 1877 the stoppage of trains and other strike-related activities took place in Scranton, Altoona, and other cities across Pennsylvania. In Harrisburg, Sheriff William Jennings managed to contain civil unrest by marshalling armed citizen supporters and ordering people to remain in their homes.
