Although free, African Americans in Philadelphia still experienced discrimination. Absalom Jones, pictured here, worked with Richard Allen and James Forten to found the Free African Society. Based on the principles of self-reliance and self-determination for African Americans, the Free African Society sought to unify free blacks against discrimination.
