This train began its journey ascending Plane 13, which appears in the distance and passed under the Company's "high works" or trestles.

Although built to haul coal, the D&H and the Pennsylvania Coal Company Gravity railroads also carried passengers, as seen in this view at Hawley, Pa., around 1885. Built for short rides, passenger cars on gravity railroads were typically more Spartan than steam railroad coaches.
