Both workers in this 1916 photograph lost their left legs in mining accidents.

Despite both the formation of unions and the enactment of laws to protect the workers in the early part of the 20th century, mines were still dangerous places to work. Both workers in this 1916 photograph lost their left legs in mining accidents.
