Disowned by the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1765, Timothy Matlack helped form the Society of Free Quakers in 1781, and was a leading radical in state politics. For this 1826 portrait by Charles Willson Peale, the 86-year-old Matlack insisted on wearing a liberty cap to show his life-long identification with the rights of the common man.
