In the 1700s, Grays Ferry was the southern-most of three ferries that crossed the Schuylkill River to Philadelphia. In June, 1803, Meriwether Lewis left Philadelphia on the floating bridge at Grays Ferry that George Washington had used on his arrival to the city soon before his inauguration, in 1789, as the first president of the United States.
