To make its way to New York markets, coal from the northern Pennsylvania anthracite coal fields traveled along both the Delaware and Hudson Gravity Railroad and the Pennsylvania Coal Company Gravity Railroad to the Delaware & Hudson Canal, which terminated at the Hudson River near Kingston. The southern coal fields linked more directly to New York City from the Lehigh Valley Railroad to the Morris Canal.
