In the 1840s and 1850s African-American businessman William Goodridge owned and operated the Reliance Line, a freight service that carried farm produce and other country merchandize on rail lines that extended from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and south to Hagerstown, Maryland. The Reliance Line also played a role in the Underground Railroad.
