A Russian aristocrat who gave up his wealth and position to minister to a small Catholic parish on the Pennsylvania frontier, Demetrius Gallitzin defended the Catholic church in America in a number of published pamphlets. The first of these, A Defense of Catholic Principles, was published in Pittsburgh in 1816.
