The Pittsburgh Gazette's first issue appeared July 26, 1786, making it the oldest newspaper west of the Allegheny Mountains. John Scull and Joseph Hall established the paper after they rode on pack horses over the rough trail from Philadelphia, bringing a small printing press and supply of paper with them.
