The year after Catharine Drinker Bowen’s birth, Cecilia Beaux painted this portrait of Catherine’s father, Henry Sturgis Drinker. Then chief counsel for the Lehigh Railroad, Drinker would become the president of Lehigh University in 1905.  (Beaux was the sister of Henry’s wife Aimee’.) An outstanding portrait painter, Beaux in 1895 became the first woman to hold a regular teaching position at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
