In the colonial era, many of Pennsylvania’s German residents were politically inactive. In the decade following the American Revolution, however, they, like other Pennsylvanians, joined political parties and became active in the great struggles of the age. A respected surgeon, Dr. Michael Leib helped organize the German Republican Society in Philadelphia, then served in Congress from 1799-1806 and as a United States Senator from 1809-1814.
