The first dramatization of The Virginian, written as a five-act play Owen Wister with Kirk La Shelle was produced at New York’s Manhattan Theater in 1904. The play ran for four months in New York and then eight years on the road.  In 1914 Cecil B. DeMille produced the first of four film versions.
