In the 1880s, outdoors writer George Washington Sears delighted America's armchair campers with a series of popular articles in Forest and Stream recounting his thirty years of exploring the woods and waters around Wellsboro. Soon, however, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and Tioga County forests were devastated by railroad logging operations, which created a barren and burnt-over landscape when they clearcut the woods surrounding Wellsboro.
