Founded in 1741 by Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinendorf in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley as a new home for German Moravians in North America, Bethlehem soon became the largest Moravian settlement in the New World. It would remain closed to outsiders until 1844.
