Born in Germany, Henry Bollen was a successful businessman in Philadelphia when he recruited and then led a regiment of mostly German volunteers, the 75th Pennsylvania, after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Bollen was killed in action at Freeman's Ford, Virginia, on August 22, 1862.
