Growing up poor in Philadelphia’s black Seventh Ward, Raymond Pace Alexander (1897-1974) attended the city’s Central High School, then met Sadie Mossell while they were both students at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating from Harvard Law, Alexander opened a practice in Philadelphia, married Sadie, and quickly became one of the city’s most effective and well-known civil rights lawyers.
