Born in Carbondale, PA, Terence Powderly began his work as a labor organizer in his early twenties while working as a machinist, was elected mayor of Scranton as a third-party candidate in 1878, and from 1879 through the 1880s was president of the Knights of Labor, the nation's largest labor union.
