The refusal of financier J. P. Morgan, Reading Railroad president George Baer, and other coal mine operators to negotiate with Pennsylvania's striking anthracite miners during the national coal strike of 1902 infuriated President Theodore Roosevelt, who set up a Commission that arbitrated a resolution in favor of the miners. In this 1902 cartoon, Roosevelt scolds the coal barons with a history lecture on the “fate of people who thought they owned the earth.”
