Wooden gear system.

Still operating, the Mill at Anselma's restored colonial wooden gear works converts the rotational speed of the water wheel-which turns at around eight revolutions per minute-to the speed necessary to drive the millstones at around ninety revolutions per minute. The gears, both large and small, also change the direction of rotation from the vertical water wheel to the horizontal millstones.
