When this photograph was taken in 1933, the three anthropologists were just returning from field work in New Guinea. Margaret Mead would divorce Fortune, her second husband, in 1935 and then marry Bateson, one of the great anthropologists of the twentieth century the next year.  She and Bateson would have a daughter, Catharine, in 1939 and divorce in 1950.
