When this photograph was taken in 1963, Malcolm Cowley, now in his mid-sixties, was serving his second term as the head of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In his seventies and eighties Cowley would remain a highly respected author, writing and publishing a series of memoirs and reflections on American literature in the 20th century.
