Samuel Allen's early designs for a "coasting" sled were tried out by his daughter Elizabeth, at the Westtown Boarding School in Chester County, PA, and at the family's Ivystone farm in New Jersey. Allen had acquired his own love of sledding while attending Westtown in the 1850s.
