In 1901 George Holley's motor bicycle had a 2 1/4 horse power motor that could propel the machine thirty-five miles per hour over an ordinary country road and ascend a 20 percent grade without the pedals. The one-gallon gas tank was sufficient to run the motor for fifty miles.
