With a standard uniform and a curriculum emphasizing discipline, honesty, and loyalty to the state, Mont Alto State Forestry Academy embodied Forestry Commissioner Joseph T. Rothrock's ideal for an institution guided by the principles of the National Military Academies at West Point and Annapolis. According to Wirt, Rothrock purposefully chose the "Academy" name to develop in his students an esprit de corps.
