Inspired by the writings of Albert Brisbane and Charles Fourier, New York newspaper publisher Horace Greeley in the early 1840s helped organize and promote Sylvania, a short-lived experimental socialist commune based upon rational principles, in Pikes Cunty, Pennsylvania.
