One of many Pennsylvania-educated scientists who participated in the great scientific expeditions of the early 1800s, William Baldwin died suddenly in 1819 during the Long Expedition to the American southwest. William Darlington ensured Baldwin's place in the field of botany by publishing his letters and biography in 1843.
