The founding of new schools in Pennsylvania was at times marked by conflict. When their Lutheran brethren announced their plans to locate a church-affiliated college along the Susquehanna River in Selinsgrove, the leaders of Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg opposed the plan. Founded in 1826, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg is the nation's oldest Lutheran seminary.
