An anti-slavery Democrat, from Reading, William Strong won election to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1857, then switched his allegiance to the Republican party in 1860. Appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the United State's Supreme Court in 1870, Strong voted consistently in favor of American business interests.
