When some civic leaders in Easton, Pennsylvania, decided in 1826 to start a college, they voted to name the school after General Lafayette, who the year before had completed his grand tour of the nation, as "a testimony of respect for [his] talents, virtues, and signal services... [to] the great cause of freedom."
