When its site was chosen in the 1830s, Girard College was well beyond the city of Philadelphia. In this lithograph one can see the idealized open fields that separated the school from the Eastern State Penitentiary, located on Fairmount Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets, and the urban development expanding from the south and east.
