Born and educated in Washington County, PA, William Holmes McGuffy attended Washington College from 1820-1825. In 1830 McGuffy joined the faculty of Miami College in Oxford, Ohio, and began a career that would include service as the president of Cincinnati College and twenty-eight years as a professor of moral philosophy and political economy at the University of Virginia.
