Founded in 1787, with an endowment of 5,000 acres from the Commonwealth, Washington Academy was reincorporated in 1806 as Washington College. In 1842 the College contained 78 students in the college proper, and 95 in its preparatory department, who took classes in the "Classical and English departments," "select studies," and "art of teaching."
