The Duryea brothers, J. Frank and Charles E., are credited not only with building one of the first successful American automobiles, but also with founding the American automobile industry. This frail gasoline-engined buggy started it all when it was driven the streets of Springfield, Mass., on September 21, 1893. The second Duryea built won the Chicago Times-Herald Motorcycle Race, Nov. 28, 1895.
