Raised in Titusville, PA, John Heisman played football while a law student at University of Pennsylvania (1890-1891), then became one of the nation's most successful and innovative coaches. Between 1892 and 1927, he compiled a record of 185-68-18, while coaching football at seven schools. After he died in 1936, the Downtown Athletic Club in New York renamed its trophy for the best college football player of the year in his honor. It remains the Heisman trophy to this day.
