After Ann Brancato's election to the Pennsylvania legislature, Republican house leaders seated the young Democrat next to Republican Martha Pennock in the midst of the Republican delegation. In her first session, Brancato witnessed some of the traditional practices of state government, including an official vote of 144 yeas despite the presence of just 96 members in the House. These she quickly reported back to newspapers in Philadelphia.
