Shenandoah typified the anthracite coal towns of nineteenth-century Pennsylvania. Its ethnic diversity reflected the great population increase that accompanied successive waves of European immigrants in the industrial age. In this 1889 print one can see the coal mines and breakers that surrounded the town.
