In 1965 Governor William Scranton signed an amendment to Pennsylvania's 1939 Occupational Disease Act, which granted compensation to miners’ afflicted with black lung disease. Attending the ceremony was Joseph Yablonski, (seated right), Pennsylvania leader of United Mine Workers, whose opposition to UMW President Tony Boyle would end with Yablonski’s murder in 1969.
