During the Great Depression, federal work relief programs funded hundreds of construction projects in Pennsylvania, including highways, bridges, schools, courthouses, hydroelectric dams, parks, and airports. Financed by the Public Works Administration, the Reading Municipal Airport opened in October 1936.
